A collection of some terms that are frequently used. More terms will be added progressively. |
avatar
The author uses the character's name as his or her email address, then the
character is an avatar, a rule of thumb though not an exact definition since
it can vary.
crossover
A fic that involves more then one universe/story. eg. X-files and Ranma
1/2. These stories tend to change the dynamics of the worlds concerned
since it involves characters that were not probably going to meet.
dark
A fan fic that does not have a happy ending. Or the mood/feel of the
story is not happy.
fusion
A type of crossover fan fiction, where you take character from one series,
but cast them into the parts of another.
lemon
A fan fic that has adult/sexual content. This term is derived from a anime
called "Cream Lemon." Synonyms: Hentai, Ecchi
lime
Not as strong as a lemon, but still does contain adult/sexual content that
may not be appropriate for minors.
MST
A critical review of a fanfic. This term is derived from the show "Mystery
Science Theater 3000" Synonyms: MST3K, MSTs, MSTing
omake
Side stories that are not canon to main story archs.
prereader
A person that can checks an authors story for flaws before he/she publishes
it. They check for grammatical errors, see if a character is in character,
give the author feedback on their story. A very useful resource.
revenge fics
Usually a spoof done by the author of a particular story where his characters
come to the real world and try to take revenge on him.
self insertion
When the author places himself/herself in the story. Synonyms: SI
spam fic
A short story usually used to demonstrate a theory or idea.
WAFF
Acronym for Warm And Fuzzy Feeling. A story that has a good ending and is
filled with happiness and joy making you warm inside. It usually has either
romance or cuteness.
yaoi
A type of fan fic that displays a male and male relationship.
yuri
A type of fan fic that displays a female and female relationship.
